Why the Existing Education Needs Reform?

The current rate of America’s dropout is quite alarming. Authorities need to find out what is wrong and make things right. The solution that we are looking for is not a mystery. However, it will require a drastic change in the current policies on education. As we all know, the generations before us find it hard to accept that the standard is subject to change. They lack the flexibility that forced us to adapt to the system they created. Moreover, any changes applied to our education system will be expensive.

Nonetheless, the existing system is also costing the economy a lot. The current dropout rate is around 1.5 million annually, which ultimately increases economic and social costs. Think about it; our current school system prepares us to enter college and not face the possible changes in our lives that some high school students will experience. By choosing to implement the current educational policy, the system is virtually robbing our graduates who cannot go to college a chance for a better life.

Education Should Be More than a Platform for Information

 educational reform

Since the 1800s, our education system has only served as a platform to access information. Today, this should not be the case since there are myriads of ways on how we can access information. The factual information that we learned yesterday cannot be valuable today. Education should be more than just an institution that provides facts. It should undergo a reform to help us turn that information into something useful.

Innovation Should Be Reflected in Our Education

It is a known fact that the score of American students when it comes to science and math are below the average. However, are you aware that those who scored in these subjects turned into technicians who promote the advancement of our country’s technology? This is since not all students will show interest in academics; others will excel in developing new concepts. Creating a new idea is what motivates these individuals.

The existing policy during the industrial revolution still exists up to this day. We are way beyond the industrial age and have already entered the information age. The changes should also be evident in our school system. Change should be implemented to maintain efficiency in this 21st century.

Dropout Rate

The dropout rate that we mentioned in the initial part of this article means that students are basically rejecting the system. Certain schools reported a 70% drop rate which is alarming. One factor contributing to this drop rate is the outdated system of our school. Students are now looking for alternatives to keep them engaged and motivated to find a productive lifestyle.

All of our youngsters want to be recognized. They desire to achieve their goal to be somebody that they can be proud of. Unfortunately, the current education system is not providing them with that opportunity. This will prompt them to search for an outlet which often leads to self-destruction. Authorities should start thinking about implementing reform in our educational system to solve the growing problems.
