Pomegranate is
considered a superfood for us humans. It is packed with antioxidants that fight
against free radicals and encourage cell renewal. However, it does not
instantly mean that this food would also be good for our dogs. We understand
how tempting it is to share something so sweet with your dog. Sharing food is a
great bonding time with your furry friend, but we discourage you from doing it.
Dogs Get Sick After Eating
Pomegranate
Most experts will
forbid you from feeding your pets with pomegranate. This is because most dogs
that eat pomegranate will abruptly show symptoms of being sick. Based on their
theory, our canine friends cannot handle the high antioxidants beneficial to
humans. It may be true that dogs will need antioxidants in their diet. However,
the antioxidants found in plants such as tannins are not essential for dogs'
health. Pomegranate has high tannin content. Aside from that, it also contains
ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Our dogs do not have the same human enzymes to
break down these nutrients. This will lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach
pain.
The seed of the
pomegranate is the part that we usually enjoy. The sweet and luscious taste
that it brings is a delight to humans. To extract that sweet juice, we crush
them inside our mouth. Pomegranate's seed is edible, but we can simply spit it
if we don't like it. Sadly, our dogs won't be able to do the same. Most dogs
will experience diarrhea since their digestive system is not designed to digest
the seeds.
What Should You Do in Case Your Dog
Eats Pomegranate?
We always have
that one dog who will try to steal our favorite food. If your dog accidentally
gets into the pomegranate, stay calm. In most cases, it should not be fatal.
Our canine friend may experience diarrhea and occasional vomiting, but it is
not life-threatening. Vomiting should just be normal. His system is trying to eliminate
the element that is causing his sickness. However, if the vomiting continues
for more than 24 hours and looks lethargic, then seek the help of a veterinarian.
If your dog
unintentionally ate a pomegranate, you just have to stay alert on their
diarrhea and vomiting. Usually, the vomiting will cease after six hours. Once they
become normal again, start feeding them smaller amounts of regular food.
Pomegranates are foods
that should not be shared with our pets. A small amount of pomegranate will
probably be just fine but never provide your dog with a pomegranate in pure
form. It has too much acid that can cause an issue to our dog's digestive
tract. If you don't want to see your dog suffering from diarrhea and persistent
vomiting, avoid giving them with pomegranate. There is always a better way to
add antioxidants to your dog's diet.
