The Concept of Transformational Leadership

I bet most of you have experienced being in a group where someone showed an exemplary passion for work. Perhaps they were able to manage the project properly by conveying the group's goal and keeping the members feeling energized. This leadership style is known as transformational leadership. James M. Burns originally introduced the concept of this style of leadership. Transformational leadership is evident if the followers and leaders allow each other to reach greater heights in motivation and morale.

The Components of Transformational Leadership

Transformational leadership requires a committed bond between the followers and the leader. Last 1985, Bernard Bass, an industrial psychologist, highlights the components that constitute this leadership style.

Idealized Influence

It states that the leader should act as a role model to his followers. They have that charismatic persona that will influence their followers to follow their lead. This component is usually expressed through the willingness of the leader to follow their ethical principles, convictions, and core values when they are executing actions. With this component, trust will gradually develop between the leader and the followers. It will also enhance the confidence of the leader.

Inspirational Motivation

This component refers to the ability of the transformational leader to encourage motivation and confidence among their followers. They can also instill decisiveness and a sense of purpose. The leader should have an articulated vision of the future to provide it successfully. They should be able to convey his expectation and exhibit commitment to achieve the team's goal. The leader should demonstrate authority, power, and precision to complete this successfully.

Intellectual Stimulation

Transformational leaders highly value the independence and creativity of their followers. The leader should show support to their followers by allowing them to participate in the decision-making procedure. The leader should also encourage them to be as creative as possible when determining the solution. Transformational leadership aims to solicit ideas from their followers without criticism. They will alter the perspective of the followers about the obstacles and problems.

Individualized Consideration

Transformational leaders understand that each group member has unique desires and needs. For instance, some people will be motivated by presenting them with excitement, challenges, and change. Others will be engaged when you provide them with monetary incentives. Leaders should be able to determine what keeps their followers engaged through observation. With the help of mentoring and personalized coaching, the leader will give opportunities for every member of the team. These activities will help the members grow and feel like they are valued members.

Based on the study, transformational leadership positively affects the organization and the group. A group that a transformational leader manages shows quality performance and a better satisfaction rate than the groups led by different leaders. To become a better transformational leader, you need to have clear and positive insights. You should have the capacity to influence others and inspire them to believe in your visions.
