Almost all types of plants can be found in and outside
our house. Pet owners should be wary since some of it appears toxic to our pets. However, cats are
pretty careful of what they eat, so cat poisoning is generally rare. In this article,
we enumerated different plants that are toxic
to our cats. Most of these can be
found in your household.
Asparagus Fern
Asparagus fern is usually a part of a floral
arrangement. Its branches are feathery similar to most fern plants. Physical
contact and ingestion can harm your cats as they are known to be toxic to them.
The toxin found in Asparagus Fern would be steroidal saponins and is proven toxic to our cats, especially when
ingested. Rubbing their skin on its leaves can cause blisters and swelling of
the skin. Ingestion may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain
Corn Plant (cornstalk plant, ribbon
plant, dragon tree)
Corn plants can survive in harsh weather conditions,
making them a popular decoration in and outside of your home. Saponin can be
traced to this plant, which is a harmful ingredient that is toxic to our cats. Sign of poisoning
includes vomiting, loss of appetite, and salivation. Sometimes a dilated pupil
may also be present.
Exotica
Also known as dumb cane, exotica is a plant that is toxic to our cats. It
contains raphites that penetrate deep into the tissue. When ingested, clinical
symptoms may include drooling, vomiting, and foaming the mouth, making it difficult
for them to swallow and breathe.
Elephant Ear
The chemical content of this plant is similar to
exotica. Signs and symptoms of poison include irritation, vomiting, and
swelling.
Lilies
Different types of lilies are lethal to our cats.
Tiger Lily, Rubrum Lily, Easter Lily,
Japanese Show Lily, etc., are considered harmful to our cats. The primary
target of the chemical toxin would be the kidney. Within just a few minutes of
ingestion, the cats may show a loss in appetite and vomiting.
Cyclamen
A flowering plant that is known to be toxic to our cats. It also contains
saponin, which may cause vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea.
Panda plant (Cordatum, fiddle leaf,
Heartleaf Philodendron, Philodendron)
Both harmful to canines and felines, this plant that is poisonous to your cats
contains a chemical similar to exotica. Mouth irritation, cramps, swelling and
pain in the oral, and difficulty breathing are some of the clinical signs that
a cat may exhibit when a philodendron is ingested.
Jade Plant
The chemical content of this plant is unknown but is
considered toxic to our cats.
Ingestion may cause low energy, vomiting, and slow heart rate.
Aloe Plant
The toxic agent of this plant that is poisonous to your cats would be aloin. Aloin is mainly
found in all aloe plants that may cause reddish urine and vomiting when
ingested by our cats.
Satin Photos
Ingestion of Satin Photos may cause increased salivation,
vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. It may irritate their mouth area, including
lips, tongue, and gums.
